first two days with Charleston Magazine!

the beautiful Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge that I take to and from work everyday. :)

Boy oh boy am I learning how much and how MANY (people that is) that go into publishing 9 magazines! Charleston Magazine (Gulfstream Communications) is comprised of two buildings located right next to each other. (one being the art department & editorial and the other being advertising, digital/web management, and sales and distribution) I work in the "art room" with about 8 other interns (the art dep. has a three month internship program so about 8-10 interns are flowing in and out at any given time) There is also a room upstairs for interns if too many of us are working at a given time. Half of us (including me!) are design interns and the other half are photo interns. The photo interns are always in and out going to various photo shoots or to pick up props and such. They also spend a lot of time shooting accessories with our brand new lighting equipment. Design interns ALWAYS have a job to do and believe me there is always something that needs to get done. Our tasks are given to us by the 4 ladies on staff and we are always carrying around notebooks to write down everything we are asked to do!

The staff includes:
Mel; Art Director_interns don't have too much interaction with her as she is not really in charge of supervising us but her office is right off out art room so we see a lot of her. She spends a lot of time talking with the various magazines editors and the editor in cheif, Darcy. She is all business but very friendly.
Julie; Associate Art Director_Julie is a tiny little blonde woman who has a high pitched voice and ALWAYS has something for us to do (which we like!) I can never read what she is thinking but she is always quick to thank us for any little task we do for her which I appreciate. I find her the most intimidating but I am not sure why yet.
Camilla; Assistant Art Director and the design intern supervisor_ Camilla is tall an blonde with an accent that is a mixture between SC and Swedish, i believe? She is so nice but also very diligent and really wants us to learn everything we can possibly fit in our brains!
Ivy; assistant graphic designer_I love her! She is short with short bouncy red curls and so nice and very personable. I am the most comfortable around her so far. Her desk is in our art room so we have more interaction with her than the others.

also today one of the interns was taken on as staff as the 2nd assistant designer, she is from PA, another northerner yay! I just met her today as she wasn't in yesterday but she seems nice.

As far as day to day jobs I am doing, it really could be anything but some examples of what i've worked on so far include:
_clipping images
_converting and replacing images into spreads
_calling/emailing photographers about featuring their photographs
_researching ideas for speads, layouts (I have a million book cases of reference mags to choose from!)
_searching for photos to potentially use for articles
_assisting with in house photo shoots (yesterday we shot cookies from a featured bakery and got to eat them afterward! bonus!)

as time goes on, design interns get more intense assignments, exciting and nerve wracking! So far I don't feel in over my head and its nice having other interns who have been there longer to show me the ropes a little. one road bump i've come across is i had no idea how to use QuarkExpress which is basically the stone age indesign and although they have switched to indesign, some of the spreads are still being laid out in quark. I have finally learned as much as i need to know but i absolutely hate that program! ha

what will day #3 bring!?
